How Ayurveda can help nourish your skin naturally from within

How Ayurveda can help nourish your skin naturally from within

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. True beauty goes beyond the surface, which is why Ayurveda recognises that radiant skin starts from within—a healthy gut, balanced hormones, and a clear mind. Explore how this ancient wisdom can help you achieve your skin goals naturally.

Treating Doshas to Treat Skin

Our body, mind, and spirit are composed of the five elements of the universe: air, space, earth, fire, and water. These elements combine to form three primary energies called doshas: Vata (air and ether), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth).

Each person has a unique combination of doshas (Prakriti), with one usually being dominant. Your skin type can be categorised as Vata, Pitta, or Kapha based on your dominant dosha. Prakriti can change (Vikriti) due to diet, season, and mental well-being. Maintaining a balanced state of doshas is essential for healthy skin.

Identifying Your Skin Type According to Ayurveda

Vata Skin: Characterised by thin, dry, and cold qualities, Vata skin dehydrates quickly, is easily agitated by stress, and is prone to premature ageing. It requires intense moisture, warming treatments, rest, relaxation, and sleep.

Pitta Skin: Known for being soft, warm, and sensitive, Pitta skin is more susceptible to inflammation, irritation, and sunburn. It needs cooling and calming herbs, gentle treatments, and good sun protection.

Kapha Skin: With thick, dull, and oily characteristics, Kapha skin tends to become congested. It benefits from deeper cleansing, gentle exfoliation, stimulation, and light-textured products.

Ayurvedic Daily Skincare Routine

Cleansing - choose cleansers that do not strip natural oils away. Vata skin needs hydrating cleansers that do not dry out the skin. You can also choose an oil for Vata skin cleaning. Pitta skin needs sensitive-friendly cleansers. Kapha skin needs exfoliating and skin-awakening cleansers. Chaveda Suwaya Face Wash and Bath Powder is tri-doshic and rejuvenates the whole body with the purifying power of natural ingredients.

Toning - toners bring back pH balance to the skin post-wash. It is especially beneficial for Vata skin to replenish moisture. Rose water, neem, witch hazel, cucumber, aloe vera, chamomile, mint and tulsi are all clarifying and hydrating toner ingredients.

Moisturising - moisture plays an anti-ageing and protective role. Sesame oil, almond oil and ghee for Vata skin; coconut oil, sandalwood and milk for Pitta skin; grapeseed, calendula and ashwagandha for Kapha skin can keep each dosha in balance. It is best to choose lightweight moisturisers for Kapha dosha. Eczema-prone skin should focus on deep hydration through an Ayurvedic eczema cream. Chaveda dosha oils, formulated with selective herbs, hydrate and nourish and are ideal for Abhyanga (massage).

Exfoliating - chickpea flour, oatmeal, coffee, liquorice root extract, sandalwood, and turmeric, mixed with honey or carrier oil, make natural exfoliators for removing dead cells. Exfoliation once or twice a week should be part of the skin routine. It ensures build-up removal, improved circulation and stimulation.

Nourishing the Skin from Within - Ayurvedic Diet and Nutrition

Dosha-pacifying: Eating to pacify the prominent dosha helps balance energies. The Vata diet should be warming, grounding and rich in healthy fats and oils. The Pitta diet needs cooling, hearty and astringent foods. The Kapha diet needs to include warm, spiced and light meals.

Natural, healthy and seasonal: Choosing natural whole foods and limiting processed food provides more nutrition. Seasonal doshas like vitiated Pitta in the summer can cause eczema flare-ups. Therefore, combining eczema products with diet is vital. Choose seasonal diets that counteract the ignited dosha.

Supplementing skin with bioactive compounds: Incorporating turmeric into cooking and hot milk offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Adding neem, tulsi, ashwagandha, amla, Guduchi, Centella, saffron, Manjistha and Shatavari as supplements helps detoxify and enrich skin with revitalising activities.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Common Skin Issues

Ayurvedic Panaceas - common skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea, are inflammatory conditions stemming from dosha agitation. Chief Ayurvedic skincare ingredients like turmeric, neem, tulsi, aloe vera and sandalwood possess antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities to prevent and treat these conditions. These are key ingredients for Ayurvedic eczema creams.

Personalised skincare - it is a hallmark of Ayurvedic skincare. Learning your dominant dosha and its aggravators and pacifiers helps you choose practices and products that benefit your skin. Each skin condition you suffer from has an underlying cause. Treating the cause is an organic way to achieve healthy skin.
